I decided to skim through a few of the Penderwick books to preview and see if they were appropriate for my ten year old grand daughter. The Penderwick family has me completely captivated. The four sisters and their dad are fully developed, very individual, extremely likable characters. I ended up not skimming, but devouring two of these fast paced and richly conceived adventures. I will read them all with great pleasure. Each book captures a season in the life of this charmingly wholesome and robust family whose mother has died of cancer. My grand daughter will enjoy them also, I am sure.Tags : The Penderwicks on Gardam Street [Jeanne Birdsall] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Penderwicks on Gardam Street Jeanne Birdsall 9780375840906 Books Reviews
My 8 year old daughter is a bit too young for the complex family environment of the penderwick family and Jeffrey's family, but she loved the kids relationship & meaningful friendships of the book. Cagney & the older sister relationship had to be explained to an 8yr old too. Good book for 10-12 year olds. But since we already discussed these relationships with her, she's excited to read the follow up books. The readability is for 4th grade though...
Birdsall manages, yet again, to write a charming, timeless tale about family, honesty, friendship, and love.
The four Penderwick sisters each have their own plots and arcs throughout the book, but must always come together to deal with the main plot of this sequel - that their father has started to date (which, I think it's only fair to point out that the dating is not the father's idea. He is, in fact, quite reluctant, and it is only because of a letter that his wife wrote for him before her death that he agrees to it).
The only downsides were that I didn't feel that this book had quite the same endearing charm and fanciful feeling as the first, and a few of the plot points were pretty predictable. However, I did find my self intrigued by the story and the storytelling. And just as the first book, it is so wonderful to have a story where siblings not only get along, but love each other and help each other, and where parents and children talk to each other like equals and honestly respect and care about each other.
I hope Birdsall will delight us with even more stories - Penderwick and otherwise.
I found the first book, "The Penderwicks", long ago in the bargain section of Borders. I have not missed a copy since. I get to enjoy all the joys and angst of childhood and the teenage years with having to go through them again personally 😀
Both my 5th grade daughter and I adore this (and the other books of this series) book. It is kind of funny, because the story is absolutely wholesome and ordinary with no really major climax, but the character's are so lively that the story keeps moving smoothly. The author does a great job reminding us older readers what it was like to be a kid. It reminds me of "The Christmas Story" movie in a way; nothing amazing happens, but an awesome story.
A great book for the entire family! My 9 year-old son is now on the 4th book of the series. He loved the first one so much that his father started reading it to discuss with him, which then led to me reading it aloud to our 5 year-old.
Just as good as the first book. Jeanne birdsall does a amazing job portraying family and sisters (most siblings fight more though). each character has their own individual and interesting personality. We also get to meet several new and equally good new characters,as well as one with a not so good intention (good job Batty ,do not doubt a four year old)
I LOVE the penderwicks!!!
Rosalind-12 years old
She is kind,loving, and responsible.
Skye-11 years old
She is stubborn, hilarious, and awesome at math.
Jane-10 years old
She is creative, queer, and practically lives in lala land!
Batty-4 years old
She is cute, imaginative, and super funny!
I found this series quite charm quite charming and fun. My favorite character is Skye. Although I HATE math...
Anyway, as I said, I love the Penderwick books. FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not listen to the other reviewers who say it is badly written, because it is wonderful!! Totally worth the money. I hope I helped!!
