The Celebrated Pedestrian Suzanne Allain Books

This book is not very deep, but it is not merely fluff either. This is a gentle story about a group of individuals who come together under strange circumstances and how their relationships develop. The story centers around Faith, a true Regency heroine, and the two men put before her as suitors. One makes the mistake of ingratiating himself with Faith's companion in London and becomes practically engaged to her in the eyes of the ton. The other is a young man who has observed Faith from the sidelines with interest during the season but is unsure of his own intentions and did not press for an introduction. Rumors about the engagement force the unwitting suitor to make a house-party out of an invitation he made to Faith to journey to his country estate where he hoped to meet her father, a celebrity sportsman, rather than court her. Other guests are hastily invited and the action quickly moves to the new setting. Eager to even the playing field Faith's willing suitor proposes a game for the young men during the course of the party that ends up having very interesting results. An adorable read. I can well imagine something very like this happening in actual regency Times. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

The Celebrated Pedestrian Suzanne Allain Books Reviews

I have read all three of this author's Regency novels, and have enjoyed every one. She writes well and incorporates great humour into her stories. This book is no exception. I hope Ms. Allain will produce more fun books.
Good book!! I have bought other books by this author, and she writes good, clean stories, with well-thought-out plots and story lines!!
This was an enjoyale read with many humorous moments as well. It was also a sweet romance, which is what I prefer, rather than one filled with graphic sex. If a book is well written, sexy scenes are not needed. I love good, clean Regency romance, a time when many women came into marriage innocent and chaste.

I look forward to Ms. Allain's next offering.
The story is quite predictable but still enjoyable as a lite read. The father figure is famous but most unlikeable. He has little interest in his daughters and is quite self absorbed. Thank goodness the story does not center mainly around him. You will like Faith who is sensible, discerning and not easily impressed. The story also has a good ending. A good book to curl up with on a cloudy rainy day.
My first Suzanne Allain book was Mr. Malcom's list. I laughed so hard at the harebrained scenarios and the embarrasing situations that I couldn't wait to read another novel by Ms. Allain. I wend on to read Incognito, and felt the same. I waited and waited for her to come out with her next book and Ms. Allain is now one of my favorite authors. She is consistent in her ability to write an engaging, light hearted, clean romance novel. I had to add the clean in there, because I truly appreciate the "less is more" when it comes to romance. Jane Austen knew what she was doing when she wrote her novels and I'm so thrilled that Ms. Allain has recognized that there is such a thrill with a charged look between two characters. I hope she goes on to write many more novels and quickly, because I've been looking for another author that I could enjoy just as well and I haven't quite found him/her!
Suzane Allain does not disappoint. I read her other books "Incognito" and "Mr. Malcolm's List" I bought this one without hesitation. Allain does a great job with her character development and dimension while including witty dialogue and good, clean regency fun!! I've already purchased these for gifts, they are perfect romance books. I bought them for my mom, sisters and mother-in-law. I cannot say enough good about these books!! I highly recommend!! I can't wait until her next one.
This is cute. It's short but gets everything developed to satisfaction. I hate to say "in the Jane Austen vein" but it is. True Janeites become up in arms when they hear this, but this little story by Allain pokes at the foibles and follies of a certain class of Regency society with much the same understated, clever humor.

There are stereotypical characters here the vain and frivolous society girl; the shy, less self-assertive female; the upper-class obtuse jock, the serious vicar, the meddling matchmaker chaperon, the girl disinterested in society's role for females, etc. But, amazingly, many of them are written with some depth in spite of the shortness of the book.

One humorous and interesting character is the titular Celebrated Pedestrian, a Captain Wentworth. There actually was a real-life sportsman Celebrated Pedestrian who served as inspiration for Wentworth, as we are informed in the author's notes at the end. We've all met people like this Wentworth. Annoyingly obsessed with exercise and eating right, to the point that his company can appeal only to a certain few. Who wants to be told at every meal that the food being served is toxic to one's health? Or that any activity not serving to improve one's muscle tone and resistance level is not worth doing?

Wentworth is one of the characters who has little depth, but the story is not about him. It's about his two daughters older daughter Faith, who prefers intellectual and social activities to the physical, and Charity, Faith's exact opposite. Faith, Charity and their father are invited to a house party by Sir Anthony Burke, who is obsessed with sports and excessively admiring of Captain Wentworth. Other young people are also invited and we are treated to 3 cute romances in the book.

I savored the reading of this. It's smartly written and yes, I'll say it again, somewhat in an Austen comedy of manners style. For example, one character named Diana is a frivolous, superficial young woman who finds herself inexplicably attracted to the young, handsome, serious vicar. She begins to feel perhaps some self improvement is in order and consults with the vicar, who suggests charitable good works to help the conditions of the poor. Allain then writes, "[Diana] only hoped that he didn't expect her to begin that morning, as her dress was far too nice to wear on a charitable mission".

The book is full of such subtle humor and I enjoyed it very much. One disappointment for me, however, was that although the book is by and large free of spelling and grammar errors, I found one of my biggest peeves. Allain writes, "...but the tears would not come and so she just LAID there trying to think of...". Holy heck! Doesn't anybody know the difference between "lie" and "lay" anymore?

Yet I must forgive her because this was an enjoyable read. I have also enjoyed her 2 previous Regencies, Mr. Malcolm's List and Incognito. They are also cute comedies of manners with understated humor.
